Colonie- John J. “JJ” Jennings, age 72, passed away peacefully at St. Peter’s Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on Wednesday, October 4th, after a period of declining health. JJ was born in Manhattan on November 24, 1950, to the late Margaret (Young) and Wesley B. Jennings Sr. JJ served his country in the United States Marines Corps from 1968-1971. He was stationed in Vietnam, Okinawa, Philippines, Korea, and Japan. JJ worked as a claims representative for the Department of Social Security, in Hudson, NY. A longtime resident of Nassau, he was a life member, lieutenant, captain, and past president of the Nassau Hose Company #1. He was a baseball umpire for 45 years; he spent 23 years as an umpire for the Nassau Baseball Association and 22 years as an umpire for the Capital District Baseball Umpires Association (CDBUA). JJ was a member of the Marine Corps League of Colonie, the Nassau Ambulance, DAV, VVOA, ABT as a regimental color bearer, Friends of Gettysburg, Friends of the Battle of Franklin Trust, Capital District Civil War Round Table (past president), the Major General Winfield Scott Hancock Society, and the Mohawk Road Runners Club. JJ was a longtime employee of the Thomas P. Mooney Funeral Home.
JJ was married to Bernadette LaManna. He is survived by his children David Jennings and Emily (Tom) Bertrand. In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his stepbrothers: Wesley B. Jennings Jr. and Donald M. Jennings.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with JJ’s family on Tuesday, October 10, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm, at the Thomas P. Mooney Funeral Home, 11 Elm St. Nassau, NY. A funeral service will commence at 10:00 am on Wednesday, October 11, at the funeral home, with Rev. Eric Kerwath officiating. Interment will immediately follow the funeral, with full military honors, in Nassau-Schodack Cemetery Route 203, Nassau, NY.
