Rensselaer- Janice Marie (Sherman) Black, age 79, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of devotion to her family, a sharp wit, and a lifetime of cherished memories.
Born in Rhinebeck, NY on February 3, 1947, to the late Willard and Mary (Bloomer) Sherman, Janice grew up in Red Hook, NY. She also spent time in Germantown, NY, before moving to Nassau, where she resided for 25 wonderful years. After a period of enjoying the warmth of Florida, Janice returned to New York, making her final home at the Franciscan Heights Senior Community in Rensselaer.
Janice was a woman of immense pride and presentation. It was a truly rare occasion to ever see her without her hair perfectly curled and her signature lipstick beautifully applied.
Throughout her life, Janice's world revolved around her children. She was their biggest fan, deeply embedding herself in their youth sports. She served on the Sorensco Women's Auxiliary for many years, where she could always be found volunteering in the concession stands with a smile.
In her later years, Janice found joy in the simple things. She loved computer games, most notably her daily games of Tri-Peaks Solitaire. She cherished her deep friendship with Andy Wilder, as well as her cherished best friend, Sherry Morey, with whom she shared a treasured weekly ritual of grocery shopping and lunch dates.
Janice was reunited in heaven with her beloved husband, Gilbert L. Black; her parents, Willard and Mary Sherman; and her sister, Joy Richmond.
Her memory will be forever kept alive by her children, Wayne Dedrick, Christopher Dedrick, and Lawrence Black; her grandchildren, Alec Forezzi, Hope Dedrick-Shears, Eliana Dedrick, and Seth Black; and her brothers, Will Sherman and Ken Sherman.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Janice's family from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at the Thomas P. Mooney Funeral Home, 11 Elm St. Nassau, NY 12123. Interment will immediately follow the visitation period at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Rd. Schuylerville, NY 12871.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Janice's memory to the youth sports community she loved so much, Sorensco Babe Ruth, P.O. Box 454, East Greenbush, NY 12061.
