Nassau- Susan Joyce (née Norton) Lynde, 78, passed away peacefully on November 18, 2025, at Riverside Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in Castleton-On-Hudson, New York. Born on August 20, 1947, in Albany, New York, she was the daughter of John and Margaret Norton. Susan was the second of five children (Edward, Barbara, John, and Margaret). She often cared for her younger siblings - acting as best friend to her sister Margaret or teaching her brother Johnny to drive when no one else would.
Susan graduated from Guilderland High School and went on to earn her master's degree from the College of Saint Rose. Her passion for teaching led her to a remarkable 38-year career at Carroll Hill Elementary School in Troy, NY, where she shaped the lives of countless students with her patience, kindness, and unwavering commitment to their growth. Years after retirement, she would always look out for her former students or their children. She took great joy in knowing where they were in life.
Susan loved to laugh and share stories. She would often be found in her classroom holding court with her friends and colleagues from Carroll Hill. She was known for her generosity and humor. She had an incredibly sharp wit and an eye roll for every occasion.
Susan's greatest devotion was to her family. In 1985, Susan married Robert Lynde of Nassau and became a stepmother to Christina, Todd, and Sherrie. A year later, she gave birth to her son, Patrick. She would hold a close bond with her son until she passed. She relished being a mother and was involved in every activity of their lives.
Susan lived a life marked by dedication to education, a deep love for her family, and a warm spirit that touched all who knew her.
She is lovingly remembered by her children: Patrick Lynde, Christina Miller, and Todd Lynde. She also held close bonds with her sister, Margaret Melander; nieces, Kelly Lescault and Sarah Ahr Swaisgood; nephew, Chad Ahr; and grandchildren, Jacquelyn Lynde, Kylien Lynde, Frank Rice, and Eric Miller. Her best friends, Sissy Horowitz and Patricia Brinthaupt, were cherished companions throughout the years.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Lynde; daughter, Sherrie Rice; and grandson, David Miller.
Susan's legacy lives on in the many lives she touched-as an educator, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, and friend. May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
