Thomas Boyle

NASSAU-Thomas George Boyle, 83, died on his birthday, Thursday October 9, 2025 surrounded by his loving children at Samaritan Hospital after several long illnesses. Born on October 9, 1942, he was the son of the late George and Evelyn Boyle. A lifelong resident of Nassau, Tom or Tommy, as he was known to family and friends, was a retired member of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union Local 7 of Albany. He was very proud of all of his commercial plumbing accomplishments throughout the capital district during his career, especially his role in building the Empire State Plaza in the early 1970s. "I put all the toilets in", one of his well known quotes. Tom was also known for his pizza making skills at the Brown Derby in Schodack throughout the 1960s. Given his powerful physique, he was often called upon to take care of the rowdy customers in the bar.
A 1960 graduate of Columbia High School, Tom's most prized achievement in life was his athletic career. Towering at 6 foot 4, he was a local high school basketball celebrity, earning the nickname "Tricky Lefty" on the court. He has numerous newspaper clippings of his many victories in his beloved scrapbook. He also lettered in four other sports: baseball, soccer, track and cross country. In his time, he held multiple school sports records that stood for decades. He was inducted into the Columbia High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009.
Tom was a dedicated body builder for several decades. He enjoyed listening to classic rock music during his weight lifting workouts. He loved to boast about squatting 500 pounds at age 50.
Tom obtained his ham radio operators license in 1962. Using his assigned call sign, WA2FHV, he enjoyed conversing with other ham radio enthusiasts around the world over the radio waves. He was a master at the art of International Morse Code.
Tom was an avid reader with a personal library of thousands of books. He enjoyed visiting used book stores, collecting his favorite genres of sports, cooking, history, and classic literature. In the 1970s and 80s, he drove his pickup truck to cleanout jobs on weekends. He would acquire treasures of books, old magazines, and antiques, often bringing home pleasant surprises of mystery novels and comic books for his children. He also collected hundreds of vinyl record albums of his favorite music genres which include classic rock, blues, and Motown.
Tom was a proud member of numerous clubs in the capital region: The Elks Lodge, The Ancient Order of Hibernians, and The Polish American Citizens Club, all located in Albany. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Rensselaer. He was a frequent patron of McGeary's Pub in Albany, Delmonico's Steak House in Colonie, and the former Bleecker Cafe in Albany.
Tom was predeceased by his loving wife Helen Boyle in 1994. Survivors include his children, Colene Phoenix (Phil), Karen Boyle (Bob Freitag), and Patrick Boyle (Eileen). Grandchildren Oliver Garrison, Addison Phoenix, Cameron Phoenix, and Elle Boyle. Brothers Robert Boyle (Peggy), Frederick Boyle (Anna) and Dennis Boyle (Stefanie). Brother-in-law George Michna (Verna). He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and many friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with his family on Monday October 13, from 4-7pm at the Thomas P. Mooney Funeral Home, 11 Elm St. Nassau. A Funeral Mass will be offered on Tuesday, 10:00am at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 26 Church St. Nassau. Interment in St. Mary's Cemetery, Nassau will immediately follow the Mass.
