William E. Ayer

Nassau- William E. Ayer, 91, of Nassau, passed away peacefully at his home on June 9, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on February 2, 1935, in Dover, Bill was the son of the late Alphonso M. and Velma A. (Young) Ayer. 

Bill was a graduate of the University of New Hampshire. Following his education, Bill proudly served in the United States Army from 1957 to 1959. Following his military service, he built a successful career with Aetna Life Insurance Company, where he worked as a Supervisor of Sales in Albany for his entire professional career.

A dedicated member of his community, Bill belonged to Trout Unlimited and the Nassau Ski Club. He served on the Board of Trustees of the Nassau Library and was deeply involved in local government, first as a trustee and later as mayor of the Village of Nassau.

Bill was an avid skier and longtime ski instructor whose passion for the sport lasted well into his later years. He continued skiing until the age of 88 and competed in New York State Senior Ski Racing events.

In addition to his parents, Bill was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Karen DiStaula, and his sister, Maureen (late John) Horan.

Bill is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Barbara J. (Leonard) Ayer; his children, Leann (Joseph Valente) Ayer and Michael (Theresa) Ayer; his grandchildren, Alexander Ayer, Michael John DiStaula, and William DiStaula; his great-grandchildren, Will and Johnathan DiStaula; and his sisters, Marcia (late Jack) Norman and Patricia (late John) Hussey.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Bill's family from 4:00-7:00 p.m., on Friday, July 10, 2026, at the Thomas P. Mooney Funeral Home, 11 Elm St. Nassau, NY 12123. A funeral service will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at the funeral home. Inurnment will immediately follow the funeral service at St. Mary's Cemetery, in Nassau.
